Save the Rhino International is a UK-registered charity that raises funds to: protect rhino populations and increase numbers in the wild; and to educate and find positive opportunities for impoverished communities living in areas of high biodiversity. Although global rhino numbers have dropped drastically in the past century (from around one million at the turn of the 19th century to fewer than 21,000 today) international conservation efforts can and do play an integral part in the successful recuperation of the species.
Day 1-4 On arrival in Nairobi you will fly to Amboseli National Park, which is dominated by Africa’s highest free standing mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, and is famous for its huge herds of elephants. Enjoy excellent private game viewing, including elephants, big cats and plains game, in both the conservancy and the national park. You will also see everyday local life on the conservancy and will have the opportunity to visit the local villages. Stay for 3 nights at Amboseli Porini Camp, a small and intimate bush camp on the Selenkay Conservation Area, just adjacent to Amboseli National Park. Days 5-7 Today you will fly to the Laikipia region, which is just north of Mount Kenya, to stay on Ol Pejeta, a 90,000 acre private wildlife conservancy. Situated on the high Laikipia plateau between the foothills of the Aberdares and the snow capped Mount Kenya, this area is home to unusual game including the reticulated giraffe and black rhino. As this is a private conservancy, you will be able to go on walking and night safaris, as well as game drives by day, where you are likely to see the Big Five alongside the other unique game of this area. You will also be able to visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya where this highly endangered and remarkably intelligent species can be seen. Stay for 3 nights at the Porini Rhino Camp, a six-tent eco camp set amongst shady acacia trees on the banks of a seasonal river.
Days 8-11 Today you will fly to the famous Masai Mara, one of Africa’s finest game reserves, which hosts the renowned annual wildebeest migration (July –Oct), when millions of wildebeest and zebra flood the plains looking for fresh grazing, followed by their predators. If you visit during this time you will enjoy excellent opportunities to see the predators in action. Stay for 4 nights at Kicheche Mara Camp, a classic, luxury bush camp set in a grove of wild olive trees on a private concession area on the edge of the Masai Mara.
Days 12-14 This morning, you will fly to the , whose history is as mysterious and fascinating as the winding streets of its medieval stone town. The island itself is a beautiful place of rolling dunes and endless beaches, where tiny villages nestle among coconut and mango plantations, and lateen sailed dhows ply the waters. Stay for 3 nights at Kizingo, an idyllic ‘no shoes, no news’ beach hideaway nestled in the Lamu dunes.
Day 15 Fly to Nairobi then overnight to the UK.
Full Itinerary
Day 1 - 4 On arrival in Nairobi you will be met and driven to Amboseli Porini Camp in the Selenkay Conservation Area, where you will stay for the next 3 nights.
The Selenkay Conservation Area lies just a few miles north of Amboseli National Park and is a significant dispersal area and rangeland for wildlife migrating out of Amboseli. In the heart of Maasailand, the conservation area is well off the beaten track and until now has not been visited by tourists. Visitor numbers are limited to retain the wild and unspoilt nature of the area and to minimise the impact on the environment. The animals are truly wild and not yet habituated to the presence of vehicles, making it a very special, wild experience.
Within the conservation area, you are likely to see a wide range of wildlife including elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, Thompson's and Grant's gazelles, gerenuk, impala, oryx, lesser kudu, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, warthog, striped hyena, jackal, bat-eared fox, Caracal, African wild cat, serval cat, genet cat, honey badger, mongoose and ostrich. Birdlife is also prolific, especially birds of prey.
Amboseli Porini Camp is a total gem - small and intimate with the majority of staff coming from the conservation area itself. It’s a proper bush camp with excellent private game viewing in the conservancy and the opportunity of going into Amboseli for a day trip. You see a bit of everyday local life on the conservancy and can visit the local villages, and all under the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro.
There are six spacious guest tents, comfortably furnished and with en suite bathrooms including shower, wash basin and flush toilet. The tents also have solar-powered electric lighting. The camp is small and is on the lines of the traditional luxury safari camp but with more comfortable bathroom arrangements than were available to the big game hunters of earlier years!
All transport is in specially designed open Landrover 4WD safari vehicles. The camp is private with a maximum of 12 guests and as Selenkay Conservation Area is a private game reserve you will not see any other vehicles or minibuses.
At Amboseli Porini Camp you will stay on a full board basis (B, L, D) which includes soft drinks, beer, house wine, sundowners, laundry and airstrip transfers. Also included are day and night game drives, game walks and a full day in Amboseli National Park.
You will spend 3 nights at Amboseli Porini Camp, www.porini.com
Day 5 - 7 Today you will be transferred to the Amboseli airstrip for your scheduled flight to Nairobi and on to Nanyuki in the Laikipia region. On arrival in Nanyuki you will be met and transferred by road to Porini Rhino Camp, where you will stay for 3 nights.
Porini Rhino Camp is a new camp located in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a 90,000 acre wildlife conservancy situated between the foothills of the Aberdares and the magnificent snow-capped Mount Kenya. Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts an astounding variety of animals including all the Big Five as well a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees. It also incorporates the smaller Sweetwaters Game Reserve. The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the open plains of Ol Pejeta guarantees an unforgettable safari experience. Ol Pejeta Conservancy has a large area of over 60,000 acres reserved exclusively for 4x4 safari vehicles and small exclusive eco-camps.
Porini Rhino Camp is hidden in a secluded valley and set amongst shady acacia trees on the banks of a seasonal river. The camp consists of six spacious guest tents, each comfortably furnished with en suite bathrooms (flush loos and safari showers). The camp is very environmentally-friendly with solar powered lighting and no generator. Game drives are taken in the camp’s 4x4 safari vehicles with qualified safari guides. Guided walks are taken on the open plains escorted by Maasai warriors. Night drives are also taken to see the nocturnal animals.

Day 8 - 11 This morning you will be transferred to Nanyuki to meet your scheduled flight to the Masai Mara. You will be met on arrival and transferred to Kicheche Mara Camp, where you will stay for 4 nights.
Kicheche Mara camp is a classic luxury bush camp, hidden in a grove of wild olive trees in a prolific wildlife area. Kenya's Masai Mara, lying adjacent to the Great Rift Valley, boasts the single largest concentration of plains game anywhere in the world.
The reserve is one of the very few areas left in Africa where wildlife can be seen in the large numbers that existed a hundred years ago. Between July and October the plains darken with wildebeest and zebra, unending columns from the adjoining Serengeti passing through on their hazardous annual journey in search of fresh pastures, unaware that they themselves are prime targets for the relentless native predators - lions, leopards and cheetahs. But there is more to the Mara than its prolific wildlife - towering escarpments, acacia-dotted grasslands, blazing sunsets and towering rain clouds provide photo opportunities at every turn.
Kicheche camp is set on a private concession area on the edge of the Masai Mara. There are 10 spacious en suite tents with flush loos and hot safari showers. You will go out on day game drives into the Mara in landcrusiers or you can go for walks with an armed guide and learn about the flora and fauna of the area and track game on foot. You can also go on night drives. In the heat of the day, siesta in your hammock or in your tent and in the evening you will have drinks around the camp fire and dinner out under the stars.
You will stay at Kicheche Camp on a full board basis (B, L&D) which includes local drinks, sundowners, game drives and walks, cultural visits, airstrip transfers and laundry.
Day 12 - 14 This morning you will be transferred to the airstrip to take the scheduled flight to Nairobi and on to Lamu on the coast. You will be met on arrival and transferred by boat to Kizingo, where you will stay for 3 nights.
Kizingo is the ultimate 'no news, no shoes’ beach resort - a wonderful secluded and tranquil escape from the modern world. The lodge is situated at one end of a spectacular 12-kilometre beach that stretches from Kizingo (which means 'the point’ in Swahili) to the fashionable village of Shela. Kizingo has eight beautifully appointed bandas (thatched cottages) which are simple but comfortable, set well apart from each other, with unrivalled sea views. In the early morning you can enjoy tea in bed and watch fishing dhows tack south to Malindi.
Guests can be as private or as social as they wish, opting to enjoy fine dining on the balcony of their banda or join other guests in the bar and the dining room with views across the bay to mainland Kenya where giant baobab trees spread into the blue sky.
The swimming is excellent, both in the Indian Ocean and in the calm waters of the channel that separates Lamu from the mainland. For the more energetic there is a big choice of activities including a guided tour of historic Lamu Town, excellent snorkelling, the chance to swim with dolphins in the winter months and cycle rides to African villages on the mainland.
The lodge is managed by Mary Jo and Louis Van Aardt, both of whom were born in Kenya and have a lot of experience in lodge management. They have a close relationship with the local village and are very active with the local turtle conservation project.
At Kizingo you will stay on a full board basis (B, L&D). The price excludes all drinks, laundry, water activities and visits to Lamu Town.
Day 15 This afternoon you will be transferred to the airstrip where you will take the scheduled flight to Nairobi.
